      MathiaOrg: 12/28/1999.

At time of baptism of son Joseph his residence was listed asOsterwick(Film # 0530228).

      OCCUPATION: Tischler.

** 11/29/2005: Found #0070830, item 1, year 1832: baptismal record of FRANCISCUM WOJEICHOWSKI ("Mathia" is handwritten next to item), born in Klodnia to ADALBERTUM WOJEICHOWSKI ("Mathia" is handwritten next to item) & BARBARA (no last name shown), on 03/03/1832. Date of baptism - 03/04/1832; performed by - xxx at Czersk,, Chojnice, West Prussia. Found by Kurt Matthia. Assumed this family to be the same as ADALBERT MATHIA & BARBARA JANCZYNSKA; the "Wojeichowski" surname was interpreted to mean "Wojciech", the Polish equivalent of "Albert". Further, since the original entry was written with an incorrect surname, explains why the "Mathia" was added as a notation on the record.

GODPARENTS: Franciscum Blumowski & Magdalena (Rostaykowska?).

** 11/30/2005: the above birth record was obtained by Kurt Matthia & Karen Aland, and was transmitted via the email copied here, received 11/26/2005 from Kurt:

Attached are the three birth documents for Franz Mathia born 3 Mar 1832. I believe the original parish record shows the birth as 3 Mar 1832 and the baptism as 4 Mar 1832. Please look to confirm this. This image is from Film 70830, Kirchenbuch, 1733-1890, Katholische Kirche Czersk (Kr. Konitz) (Main Author). Note the marginal entry ‘Alias Mathia’ is outside of the area normally written in when compared with all the other entries in the book.
The handwritten “Kopie” made by the Catholic church has the same entry but has transcription errors. It comes from film 812329 Item 1, Kirchenbuchduplikat, 1832-1848, Katholische Kirche Czersk (Kr. Konitz) (Main Author). Adalbert is made into Albrecht, the birth date column was transcribed incorrectly from the original, etc. An important thing about the Kopie is that the ‘Alias Mathia’ entry is not a part of the copy. This leads me to believe that this note was added after the copy was transcribed. We don’t yet know the date the Kopie was made, but we assume the notes at the beginning of the reel may tell us the date.
The Abschrift (extract or copy) has what looks to me like an incorrect birth date by one day. The Abschrift was made by the priest in 1940 and then a few days later certified by the civil authority. It is my suspicion that the ‘Alias Mathia’ entry may have been made by the priest in 1940. This record was passed down through the Mathia family to Burkhard Mathia.
Peter Pankau is working on this with us and just called Burkhard. Here is part of an email he sent to Karen about what he found out and what his conclusions are:
      Hello Karen,
the mystery begins to become a little clearer. This evening I called Burkhard Mathia in Bremen. First of all his hearing had become pretty good again after a surgery. My last information was, that he couldn't work anymore since 2002 because he was quite deaf. I didn't had email contact with him since 2002.
He has send a big letter to you with lot of copies and documents. There are also included some Scheffler records and he promised to send them to me too. Those records were collected by his grandfather August Franz Mathia, who became mayor of Osterwick, when the Germans had attacked Poland in 1939. As he was an official in the German administration, he had to present an Ahnenpass. August Franz Mathia surely know his grandfather personally and perhaps his birthdate and town of birth. At the other side Anna Mathia, nee Scheffler was still alive in 1940 and she perhaps knew the dates of her father in law. May be his father was alive too. So it was easy for August Franz Mathia to pick out excatly the birth and baptize record of his grandfather. So this birth record is surely the record of Franz Mathia.
Why is the surname Wojciechowski in the record?
      The priest make a mistake?
The family forgot the name of the parents and wrote down another, perhaps of the farmer, where Adalbert worked?
      Or something else?
What to do more? Perhaps in the records, Burkhard send to you, will be the solution. May be a complete marriage record with the parents of bride and groom?
Burkhard also send you the family chronicle of my grandfather Johann Scheffler. The chronicle is written in a simple language, not any sentence construction and punctuation and no chronical sequence. A secretary at my work typed it in to a winword file and tried to make it better readable. Later I tried to bring it again to the original form, but never get ready. Burkhard told, that you speak also German from your high school years. Ich hoffe, du kannst alles verstehen in der Familien-Chronik.
I look forward your response and also the letter from Burkhard.
      Regards -Peter
Kurt again. Burkhard has sent Karen a number of family documents (mentioned by Peter). We hope these also shed some light on the issue.
In the meantime, I believe we have enough evidence that Franz belongs to our Adalbert Mathia and Barbara Janczynska. Pauline being at the baptisms of his children is also an indicator.
