!** 02/2000: per e-mail from Jim Mathia, 02/11/2000: "Joseph was one of three brothers that came over from Prussia. The three were lumberjacks in the area north of Berlin, WI. Joseph , Frank & John were the brothers. Frank died in the woods while logging and was buried there. The project they worked on was the clearing of northern Wisconsin for the railroad and helped open up transportation to northern Wisconsin. There are also stories told to me that Joseph was a whaler and carpenter on a whaling ship in his earlier days. My Dad (Florian Mathia) also told me stories that when his grandfather (Joseph) retired, he became a fisherman in Berlin (Wi.). He told me that he caught large catfish and sold them in town. I used to think thess were just "big" fish stories, but my uncle Johnny showed me pictures of the large catfish (75 lbs and greater) he caught. What I need to do is write down these stories for future generations. The most noted fact you will find with the personnel from Berlin, Wisconsin is that many died during "The Spanish Lady": the flu epidemic of 1918-1919. Both my great-grandparents & grandparents died during this epidemic. It should be noted that about 20-30% of Berlin (Wi .) died in the epidemic."

      MERGED: 05/25/2002.
JOSEPH MATHIA (born abt Feb 1833-1838) husband of MARCYANNA SLOMIONKA (DOM 14 Jan 1863)
      and
JOSEPHUS MATHIA (born 30 Sep 30 1836) son of JACOB MATHIA & EVA KROLL
      may be the same individual.
      Supporting evidence:
      a) The DOBs are within reason.
      b) JACOB & EVA had their children in Zalno, but JOSEPH & MARCYANNA were married in Kl. Komorze, the town where Marcyanna was residing at the time of their marriage. Zalno & Kl. Komorze are located relatively close to each other.
      c) Supposedly (per email from Jim Mathia) JOSEPH (1833-1838) had two brothers (JOHANN & FRANZ) and the three of them settled in and around Berlin, Wisconsin. So far, we have identified a JOSEPHUS (1836) and JOANNES (1842) as children of JACOB & EVA.
      Additional supporting evidence:
d). At the time of their marriage (01/14/1863), Joseph stated he was 25 (est DOB 1838) and
Marcyanna 24 (est DOB 1839). If this Joseph really is the son of Jacob & Eva, then his actual
DOB (1836) would have made his actual age 27.
At the time of Marcyanna?s death in 1930, her death record (which was reported by her son
Joseph) states that her age was "94 yrs, 7 mos., 18 days", which calculates her DOB as
06/24/1835. For her age to be that precisely stated, she and her children must have known
exactly when she was born; otherwise, her age most-likely would have been stated only in
      years.
Assuming 1835 is Marcyanna's actual DOB, then she would have been age 28 (rather then 24)
at the time of her marriage. Additionally, she would have been one year older (28 vs 27) then
the Joseph, son of Jacob & Eva.
Rather then she marrying a younger man, and he marrying an older woman, both restated
their ages, such that he was older then she, and both were younger then they actually were.
      e) At the time of Joseph's death in 1918 (which was also reported by son Joseph) his age is
given as 83 years, which would calculate his DOB at 1835 (within 1 year of the birth of Joseph &
Eva's child). Further, on that death record, son Joseph reported his father's parents as JACOB
& MARY MATHIA. In the Tuchel church records where all of the research is centered, there is
NO mention of a family of JACOB & MARY MATHIA. The only family where the husband is
named Jacob is the one where the wife is Eva Kroll.
In the family of Jacob & Eva Mathia, Eva died in 1869, two years before the birth of Joseph
(1871), the son of Joseph & Marcyanna, who reported both of their deaths. Assuming Eva was
this Joseph's grandmother and since he never knew her, it would likely be that he was mistaken
about her first name. (Jacob may have remarried a "Mary" after "Eva's" death, but no evidence of this exists as of now).
      f) In the 1900 Census Records, Joseph's DOB is shown as 02/1833 and Marcyanna's as
07/1835. It is also stated that neither Joseph nor Marcyanna can read, write or speak English,
therefore someone else (most-likely their son Joseph -- who lived with them at the time) provided
      the information to the census-taker.
Assuming the logic is correct in item (d), above, about precisely knowing the DOB of
Marcyanna, then her DOB on the census can be interpreted as legitimate, and it does agree
with her death record. Joseph's DOB is just another attempt to make him older then his wife.

02/13/2002: MATHIA PASSENGER LIST RESEARCH **************************

FATHER: JOSEPH MATHIA (born 1836), Zalno (spouse of MARCIANNA SLOMIONKA): on the 1900 census record said he emigrated in 1881. (Suspect that this JOSEPH was the godfather for MATHIAS MOLUS (born 1873 in Bialowieza, baptized in Tuchel). (Suspect that wife MARCIANNA was the godmother for THEODOR MOLUS (born 1878 in Bialowieza, baptized in Tuchel).

Have found that the families of JOSEPH & MARY MOLUS, and their sons MATHIAS & WANDA MOLUS and THEODORE MOLUS & ANNA MACHOL settled in Berlin, Wisconsin, along with JOSEPH MATHIA & MARCIANNA SLOMIONKA and their sons. (Suspect that this JOSEPH MOLUS is the godfather for son FRANZ MATHIA (born 1874 in Bialowieza, baptized in Tuchel).

Reviewed the “Germans to America” CD and found the family of JOSEPH & MARY MOLUS and their children ANASTASIA, MATHIAS, SUSANNA & THEODORE arriving in the port of Baltimore, on April 25, 1880 from the Breman port of embarkation, aboard the vessel SS. STRASSBURG. Searching thru film #0417413, Baltimore Passenger Lists 10/01/1879 thru 05/14/1880: found this family --- JOSEPH MOLUS (age 40), and his wife MARIANNA (age 34), and their children ANASTASIA (age 9), MATHIAS (age 7), SUSANNA (age 5), and THEODORE (age 10 months) . However, their were no MATHIA individuals on this ship. (However, there were the immediately-recognizable families of ISIDOR RIESOPH with wife MARIANNE and children ROSALIE, MARTHA & URSULA, as well as MICHAEL MALZIN with wife CATHERINE and children JOHANN, WLADISLAW & JOSEF).

The sons of JOSEPH MATHIA & MARCIANNA SLOMIONKA, reported the following dates of emigration on the various census records found:

      ANTON (born 1866):

      1900 Census: 1885
      1920 Census: 1881

      JOSEPH (born 1871):

      1900 Census: 1881
      1910 Census: 1881
      1920 Census: 1893 (somewhat illegible).

      FRANZ (born 1874):

      1900 Census: 1882 (somewhat illegible)
      1910 Census: 1879.

Between the father JOSEPH, and the three sons, the year “1881” is a consistent number, so the decision was made to search the 1881 passenger lists to the port of Baltimore (which is where there friend Joseph Molus arrived in 1880).

Assuming they emigrated in 1881, the ages of the members of this family would have been:

      Joseph (father) 45.
      Marcianna (mother) 46.
      Anton 15.
      Joseph 10.
      Franz 7.

Start again with May 2, 1881.……….(Port Morant)

      02/18/2003:

Before resuming with the Baltimore Passenger lists (above), discovered the film #1379337, “Wis. Green Lake Co., Declaration Card Index 1858-1949 and Naturalizations Card Index (A-L) 1859-1946” (filed in the back room at the FHC). The “Declaration Index” part of the film had the following entries:

MATIEA, JOSEPH (Mathia), born Prussia 1836, arrived N.Y. 1881, Dec. of Intent, vol 3, page 225 1886. (Don’t know who this is).

Based on this finding, ordered the following films:

#1404682, Green Lake Co., WI. Declarations 1858-1887; volumes 1-3.

#1404683, Green Lake Co., WI. Declarations 1858-1906; volumes 3-4.

Also --- have decided to search the New York Passenger Lists. Start with film #0295799, “N.Y. Passenger List, 12 Apr. 1881 to 30 Apr. 1881”.

      02/19/2003.

** 02/19/2003: Found #0295799, New York Passenger List, 12 Apr. 1881 to 30 Apr. 1881: S.S. PARTHIA, arriving in the port of New York on 14 April 1881, from the ports of Liverpool England and Queenstown Ireland: JOSEF MATHIAS, age 47 (1834), male, laborer; MARIANNA MATHIAS, age 47 (1834), female, wife; JOHANN MATHIAS, age 11 (1870), male, child; ANTON MATHIAS, age 10 (1871), male, child; JOSEF MATHIAS, age 8 (1873), male, child; FRANZ MATHIAS, age 6 (1875), male, child. Assumed this to be the family of Joseph Mathia & Marcianna Slomionka.
